Kannawidan Ilocos festival is the commemoration of the foundation of the province of Ilocos Sur. This festival is a showcase of indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January and ends on the first week of February. Furthermore, It is also the Ilocanos’ way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the province, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos.
Traditionally during the opening of the festival, there is usually a mass held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It is followed by a procession of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around Vigan City. DepEd Officials of the province usually join the mass and the procession. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the Ilocanos. Moreover, the festival pays more attention on Ilocano children. It is because Ilocano culture are not recognized by the younger generations of the province. But instead, there is more on modern dances. With this kind of endeavor, Ilocano children may appreciate their rich culture and tradition. That is why this Festival is conducted.
Also on the opening day of the festival, a traditional ritual is performed by the students of Ilocos Sur.The Kannawidan Ylocos Festival encourages the younger generations to learn the indigenous songs and dances of the province of Ilocos Sur. Ilocos Sur is a beautiful province located in the northern part of Luzon. It is a province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. To show and share their treasures to the whole world, the locals conceived a festival that highlights these cultural traditions and they called it the “Kannadiwan Festival”. It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province.
One of the importance of our culture and traditions is that it remind us that we are part of a history that defines our past, shapes who we are today and who we are likely to become. It also our way to promote each province's patron saint or most known products. For religious festival in the Philippines, Filipinos express their gratitude to the patron saints for bountiful blessings. To add more, iam very much proud to all the residents and part of the goverments in making us remember the things that we should be grateful and give us so much blessing in our life. This festivals commemorate our local history and culture that we can share to everyone. I really love the effort of one another in gathering and showcasing their differents indigenous performances, religious rituals, as well cooking demos featuring the best of Ilocano dishes in celebrating the Kannawidan festival.
And lastly, i hope that the next generation will still witness and experience the wonderful events here in vigan. There are so many things to try such as places, foods and many events they could visit and join. Having these beautiful culture and traditions, for all the next generation out there, let's preserve and protect this at all cost. I am looking forward on the many more events and activities that our community can offer.
