What is the MS Frontpage?
Microsoft FrontPage (full name Microsoft Office
FrontPage) is a defunct Microsoft WYSIWYG HTML editor and website
administration tool for the Microsoft Windows operating system. From 1997 to
2003, it was marketed as part of the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft
FrontPage has since been replaced by Microsoft Expression Web and SharePoint
Designer, which were released alongside Microsoft Office 2007 in December 2006,
but these two products were also discontinued in favor of a web-based version
of SharePoint Designer, as those three HTML editors were desktop applications.
History
FrontPage was developed by Vermeer Technologies,
Incorporated of Cambridge, Massachusetts, as evidenced by file names and
directories beginning with _vti_ in FrontPage-created websites. Vermeer was
purchased by Microsoft in January 1996 specifically to add FrontPage to its
product line-up, allowing them to gain an advantage in the browser wars, as
FrontPage was designed to create web pages for their own browser, Internet
Explorer. FrontPage is a "WYSIWYG" (What You See Is What You Get)
editor that is designed to hide the details of a page's HTML code from the
user, allowing novices to easily create web pages and websites.
FrontPage made its first appearance under the Microsoft banner in 1996, with the release of Windows NT 4.0 Server and its constituent Web server Internet Information Services 2.0. FrontPage 1.1 was included on CD with the NT 4.0 Server release and could be used with NT 4.0 (Server or Workstation) or Windows 95. Up until FrontPage 98, the FrontPage Editor was a separate application from the FrontPage Explorer, which was used to manage website folders. Both programs were merged into the Editor with FrontPage 2000.
Advantages and Disadvantages of MS Frontpage
The use of Microsoft FrontPage has two advantages. One
of them is that the interface of Microsoft FrontPage is identical to that of
Microsoft Word. As a result, people who are used to using Microsoft Word can
use FrontPage's tools. Furthermore, the software is very simple to use. Another
advantage of using this software is that it provides amazing themes with which
to create very useful websites. As a result, there are numerous web buttons,
banners, and images in this software.
However, there are two disadvantages to using this
program. First, the software typically includes a large number of redundant
codes in web page programming. Your web pages created with Microsoft FrontPage
could be viewed clearly by Microsoft Internet Explorer, but not by other web
browsers such as Mozilla Firefox. Second, a web server is required to run some
dynamic activities. According to Joe in his article 'Macromedia Dreamweaver Vs
Microsoft FrontPage,' 'Another minor disadvantage of Frontage is that you need
a web server that supports FrontPage extensions to get some features to work.'
Finally, FrontPage is not well-suited to browsers
other than Microsoft's. The majority of what it produces is only compatible
with Internet Explorer. So, if you want your Web page to appeal to a wide range
of users (and who doesn't? ), you must exercise extreme caution.
