The power within a woman

Being a single mother makes me even stronger

All mothers are wonderful but raising a child on her own is more incredible. Families today come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The "typical" family of two parents and two children is no longer typical. You might be raising your children by yourself. Becoming a single parent can be challenging yet It can also be very rewarding.

There are 1,151 single moms here in our province of Ilocos that is working so hard just to support their family. Taking all the responsibility is no joke, especially in this pandemic that made all of us suffer. For single parents, having to suddenly manage kids whose schools and playgrounds are closed and whose caregivers can no longer come to work can be especially overwhelming. Getting through the day-to-day of life under quarantine is stressful enough, let alone juggling working from home or dealing with the fallout from unexpected unemployment. Add to that your social isolation from other adults, and the task of single parenting can seem unattainable.

According to the National Women's Law Center, 2.3 million women have dropped out of the labor force since the pandemic began. Their labor force participation rate in February was 57 percent, down from 59.2 percent in February 2020, and had not been this low since 1988. Furthermore, in a recent McKinsey study on working women, COVID could wipe out six years of progress in women's equality as women leave the workplace and, due in part to a lack of childcare options, do not return. But in many ways, the pandemic pressures that have harmed all women have hit single moms even harder.

It's amazing to see these mothers who have the most burdens but are also the most determined and strong. Many problems come their way but they remain resilient. It’s totally crazy how they never complain or easily give up even how hard life is. My admiration for them grew with each passing day as I witnessed how amazing they were.

Every mother deserves appreciation from everyone. They earn hugs and kisses from us for all the care and love they shared. A simple I love you and thank you are important to let them feel that we value them. These small things are enough for them. Words cannot describe how much love our mother can offer to us. Being a mother is difficult because they made many sacrifices and endured much pain while carrying us in their wombs. Can you imagine? Despite the pain, they can still smile through it. That’s why it is significant for us, whether we are a kid, adults, or elders, to respect our mothers who brought us to this wonderful world and do everything just for us is precious. To all mothers out there, thank you so much for caring and loving us. We love you, we appreciate you, and we value you.
